Abstract

It sometimes happens that to solve a problem one is well-advised to ignore the trees and focus only on the forest. The branch of Geometry which studies certain large-scale features of shapes is Topology. In this talk we play with elementary examples, and then we illustrate how topological ideas developed internally in Mathematics play a role in contemporary Physics.
