Mathematics Education
by Sa’diyya Hendrickson (University of Toronto)
Many students work hard in mathematics yet continue to struggle. While mathematics is cumulative by nature, students are rarely taught how mathematical knowledge accumulates over time, what mathematics demands, or how to learn it effectively.
This session looks at what changes when students are taught those things directly: what math is, how to think mathematically, and the research-informed habits that help them learn efficiently, actively, and purposefully through the emerging LEAP in Math™ framework.
The session is meant for anyone working to widen access to high quality math education and help more students succeed.

What is LEAP in Math?
LEAP in Math™ (Learn Efficiently, Actively, and Purposefully) is an emerging framework that makes the hidden demands of math visible and teachable. Instead of leaving students to work out on their own how to keep up in a subject that builds on itself, it gives them clear, practical ways to learn it.
What you'll experience
You'll spend the part of the event watching the framework in action and discussing how it can support students in your own setting:
● Observe Grade 10–11 students take part in a live LEAP workshop, run through the Blueprint Program organized by the University of Toronto's Engineering Outreach Office.
● Hear those students reflect on the approach and how it shapes their learning.
● Learn more about the LEAP in Math™ framework and the challenges it is designed to address.
● Join a facilitated discussion about adopting LEAP across different educational settings.
What you'll take away
We will provide all participants with resources that allow you to begin to use LEAP with your students. You will leave with initial ideas on how to adapt LEAP to your context and we will also support follow-on conversations on these adaptations
Who should attend
This session is for people and organizations interested in expanding access to high quality math education and supporting student success, who can enable implementing this framework in their space:
● School board leaders
● Educators (grade school and postsecondary)
● Outreach and pathway programs
● Equity-focused initiatives
● Academic support programs
● Community organizations
