Tonelli Hamiltonian systems admit special invariant sets related to action minimizing orbits, discovered by Aubry and Mather. Later a more general theory was developed by Mather, Mane and Fathi. We will discuss how this theory is used to study topological instability in Hamitonian systems, and in particular, the question of Arnold diffusion.
