Geometry has come a long way from the field studied by the Ancient Greek γεωμέτραι (geometers). This talk will tour the geometric aspects of geometry, leaving aside the parts of geometry which belong to algebraic geometry, differential geometry, and the host of other suites in the great mansion. Emphasis will be given to geometric inequalities, and spheres in Euclidean spaces.

The two focuses of the talk will be the Gromov-Loewner inequality for systoles of tori and Gromov's waist inequality for Euclidean spheres. Applications in combinatorics and topology will be sketched. No prerequisites will be assumed; there will be many pictures.

Free pizza will be available at 4:30 pm in BA6183. Please join us at the Red Room pub (444 Spadina Avenue) after the seminar; we shall congregate at 6:15 pm in the lounge of the sixth floor of Bahen Centre, and walk to the venue.
