Beyond Endosopy is a strategy proposed by Langlands fifteen years ago for attacking the principle of functoriality, one of the pillars of the Langlands program. Some recent progress is showing what a remarkable set of ideas it is turning out to be, with surprising relations to many different parts of mathematics. We shall discuss the foundations of Beyond Endoscopy, with the hope of being able to describe recent developments with another talk in the spring.
