This will be an impressionistic talk based on Pierre Cartier's beautiful survey paper of the same name, the subtitle being "The evolution of concepts of space and symmetry".
Familiarity with the notions of a sheaf, and of the philosophy of studying a space by studying the "functions" on it (as in algebraic geometry, or C*-algebras) will be helpful.
