Algebras are to operads as group representations are to groups. These objects encode various forms of associativity and commutativity that one encounters when studying algebras. For example, there is an operad Ass whose representations are associative algebras and an operad Lie whose representations are Lie algebras. In this talk I will introduce a few basic examples of these structures and their applications.
